Where the Benguela Current Meets Your Glass
International Sauvignon Blanc Day - Friday, 1 May 2026
Some wines reflect a place. Benguela Cove Sauvignon Blanc tastes of the edge of the world. Our journey stretches across two hemispheres, linked by the annual migration of the barn swallow. Whether you are visiting our vineyards in South Africa’s Walker Bay or our estates in the UK, you can experience the craft behind our cool-climate wines. We invite you to enjoy our award-winning collections and guided tasting experiences at Leonardslee Wine Estate and Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens in West Sussex.
On International Sauvignon Blanc Day, we take you to the source. Located between Hermanus and Cape Town, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate sits where the Bot River Lagoon meets the Atlantic Ocean. We manage one of the longest continuous ocean-facing vineyard strips on the planet. This is cool-climate winemaking in its most dramatic form.
The Terroir: Why Walker Bay Changes Everything
Sauvignon Blanc is a grape of place, and at Benguela Cove, that place is extraordinary. The Benguela Current - a cold upwelling from the Southern Ocean - acts as an invisible winemaker, moderating daytime heat and preserving the vivid acidity and aromatic tension that make great Sauvignon Blanc so compelling.
The 70-hectare vineyard lies within the UNESCO-designated Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, one of the most botanically diverse regions on Earth. Growing in chalky, iron-rich cobblestone and Bokkeveld shale, the vines produce fruit with a distinctive mineral edge - wines that carry a genuine sense of place in every glass.
Four Expressions, One Extraordinary Estate
Lighthouse Collection - Vibrant & Approachable
Named for the lighthouse overlooking the lagoon, this wine suits celebration. Fresh gooseberry and grapefruit aromas on the nose precede melon and peach flavours on the palate. A saline, oyster-shell finish reflects our sea-facing location.
-
Best enjoyed with: Fresh oysters, smoked salmon, or a light Caprese salad.
Estate Collection - Complex & Terroir-Driven
This range makes a statement. Vivid green fig, bell pepper, and gunflint aromatics meet racy, focused acidity. We prioritise concentration and balance, creating a wine that rewards the thoughtful drinker. It suits those who appreciate site-expressive white wines.
-
Best enjoyed with: Grilled fish, goat’s cheese, or herb-crusted lamb.
Vinography - The Artisan Range
Vinography functions as the journal of our estate. It captures our ongoing experimentation and respects the nuances of specific vineyard blocks. We produce these wines in limited quantities to showcase the distinct personality of our vines.
The Vinography Sauvignon Blanc exemplifies this approach. It moves beyond standard varietal character, using 500-litre French oak barrels with Acacia heads to add complexity. The result offers a chalky texture and a flinty character that balances the fruit, revealing power and precision.
-
Best enjoyed with: Seared scallops, roasted poultry, or refined vegetarian dishes.
Noble Late Harvest - Indulgent & Golden
This wine proves that our cool-climate terroir produces richness without losing freshness. It serves as a restrained dessert wine, balancing sweetness with natural acidity. Honey blossom and dried peach lead to a long, warm finish.
-
Best enjoyed with: Ripe figs, blue cheese, or crème brûlée.
A Word from the Cellar Master
"The unique location of our vineyards doesn't only make for wines showing a strong sense of place, but also a style that's elegant with beautiful balance." - Johann Fourie, Cellar Master
Winemaking with a Conscience
At Benguela Cove, sustainability isn't a marketing footnote - it's a founding principle. Under the leadership of Penny Streeter OBE, the estate operates according to the /Xam San concept of hannuwa: living in sustainable harmony with the natural environment. The Kogelberg Biosphere and Bot River Lagoon are protected as partners, not exploited as resources.
How to Celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day on 1 May
-
Serve the Lighthouse Collection well chilled at 8-10°C - its coastal freshness sings cold.
-
Serve the Estate Collection slightly warmer at 10-12°C, allowing the complexity to open up in the glass.
-
Take a moment before you sip. The luminous straw-green colour and the lift of saline aromatics are there to be appreciated - you're not just tasting wine, you're tasting the Antarctic current and the salt air of Walker Bay.
Raise a glass to the ocean. Happy International Sauvignon Blanc Day.
