Welcome to our first Vineyard news post.
In these troubled times it is good to have something to look forward to. One day, self-isolation will end. We can all take up where we left off and once again enjoy all the great and simple pleasures in life.
At Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate we are looking forward to our very first harvest in 2020. We will at last see the fruits of the 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards that were planted in 2017. The harvest will be at the end of September, or early October, dependent upon the weather.
At the moment we are running about a week or so late. But that’s fine, as long as there are no frosts! We are going to considerable lengths to counter Jack Frost, with new equipment that we have brought in.
More on this in future posts.
Vineyards Planted at Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate
You may know the story of the vineyard planting; how in 2017 we converted one of the two 18-hole golf courses into a 9-hole, and used the free space to plant sparkling wine cultivars, 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier.

We also have an experimental vineyard of non-sparkling Pinotage at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, a 0.5 hectare site planted in 2018, to evaluate the local growing conditions for a grape that is more usually associated with South Africa.

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate - Walker Bay
Benguela Cove offers a very special terroir, for grapes of superb quality.
Positioned at the ocean's edge, the south-easterly sea breeze is chilled by the Benguela current flowing up from Antarctica, to cool the grapes at night after the warm summer days, irrigated by above-average rainfall.
If it sounds like a wonderful location, it truly is!
