Following the success of the maiden release 2017 vintage, the recently released Benguela Cove Catalina Sémillon 2018 is following in the tracks of its predecessor.
The 2018 showed promise as a youngster at the 2018 SA National Young Wine Show when it was awarded best-wooded Semillon in South Africa. Still, in its infancy, the wine also caught the attention of Platter’s who awarded it with 4.5 stars; more recently Tim Atkin rated it with a near-perfect 94 points.
Fast forward two years from 2018, it has now been crowned the best in its class at the 2020 Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards, coming out on top!
True to its promise of being an age-worthy white wine that will improve and gain complexity in the bottle over the years, produced in limited quantities from a single vineyard, it is all out on allocation already. We have however kept a few cases aside for visitors to the Benguela Cove farm, its wine club members and the connoisseur seeking an exquisite collectable.
About the awards
The Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards honours the wines which truly portray South Africa's different wine growing areas.
Terroir has been the 'buzzword' among wine aficionados for several years now. The basic concept is to discover wines that best reflect the terroir in which they are produced.
The results of the 15th annual Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards once again portray the Western Cape as a particularly versatile area with diverse and excellent terroir, which produces a variety of top quality wines.
The significant role of single vineyard wines in the Wine of Origin system was emphasised this year by the fact that seven single vineyard wines were named national winners. No other wine represents terroir more specifically than a single vineyard wine.
“While this year might be remembered mostly for COVID-19, it’s encouraging to know that among the turmoil, our esteemed winemakers stood the test once again in producing top quality wines.” - said Derrick Roper, Founder and Director Novare Holdings
