Our Wines And Stories: The Lighthouse Collection

Lighthouse Collection - The Story

Benguela Cove Wine Estate boasts the longest stretch of ocean facing vineyards (2.6km), grown at the lowest altitude (2.7m above sea level). With this unique location and optimum climate conditions, ideal viticulture, our master winemaker has created the Lighthouse Collection Wine Range.

Dedicated to the craft of allowing each wine to tell its own story, only estate-grown grapes are used to encapsulate this quintessential cool climate. The Lighthouse Collection range of wines was created to celebrate slopes that deliver wines with vivid fruit expression, lower acidity and softer tannins leaning more towards earlier release and enjoyment.

Benguela Cove has erected its own lighthouse – the beacon that historically guided ships to safety around the Cape – an ode to this marginal climate close to the ocean. Stormy winds, once a threat to ships' en route to the Cape, now cool the vines anchored in the terroir.

Lighthouse Collection - The Wines

Lighthouse Sauvignon Blanc 2019

The aroma is explosive of green figs and lemon zest with hints of ripe guava, green strawberries and top notes of elderflower. The fruit intensity fills your mouth and finishes with a salinity that reminds you or river pebbles. Its lean character makes it a great food companion with plenty of fruit to pour as aperitif. Loved by city-slickers who follow this style religiously, it embraces both an Old World minerality as well as that flamboyant fruit associated with New World styles.

Lighthouse Rosé 2019

A delicious medley of fruit, florals and candied aromas - enjoy this wine as an aperitif or to complement an array of colourful dishes. Its vibrant character is marked with expressions of strawberries, watermelon and cherry-nougat, tailed by notes of citrus, pineapple, and lemon verbena. And yes, it is as mouth-watering as it sounds. While fostering the essence of Provence-style rosé’s, it also captures that quintessential cool climate elegance and freshness. Syrah adds fullness and plush red fruit while Sauvignon Blanc adds tension, floral and citrus notes and frames the wine with a distinctive acidity.

Lighthouse Moody Lagoon 2017

Five red cultivars combine forces to introduce a wine that delivers on fruit purity with enough gravitas to announce intensity, balance and a charming freshness. This wine is a culinary gem as well as a trusted companion on the table when old friends get together for a hearty meal. The Moody Lagoon Red Blend 2017 serves as an ode to the Bot River lagoon adjacent to the estate. Nicknamed “Moody” the lagoon is known to be unpredictable in colour and appearance. As mirror-like as it can be, the wind can turn it choppy in seconds. The water is also instrumental in moderating temperatures, joining forces with cool maritime winds caressing the vines from the Atlantic Ocean. These vineyards are micromanaged to showcase the diversity of cultivars grown on the estate.

Lighthouse Syrah 2017

Announcing itself with evocative aromas, fruit prevailed in this elegant, balanced and delicious Syrah.  Young yet forthcoming, it is evident the winemaker followed a hands off approach not to let the oak overpower the essence of this wine. Planted on contrasting slopes and soil types sets the bar for a layered and complex wine to arise from these Walker Bay Syrah vineyards.
